In response to a globalised economy of mass-production, ‘Spectra’ prevents textile waste by redesigning the surfaces of second-hand clothing. Repurposed as sustainable music merchandise, the clothing is reintroduced into material circulation through music venues to promote my psychedelic rock band 'El Lissitzky'.
A selection of second-hand dark-coloured clothing are upvalued with repeat prints and bespoke designs inspired by the relationship between sound and spirituality. Sourced from charity shops, unsold t-shirts burdened with kitsch graphics are upvalued with spiritual motifs with an ironic appeal.
Bleached by discharge prints which remove pigment from the dark garments, the motifs are inspired by the geometric imagery of cymatics (i.e. the study of sound visualisation) and spiritual symbols that reoccur in different cultures. Soundwave vibrations are interpreted visually using stamping methods, and a scientific method with the help of Dr Jules Rawlinson, a sound design professor at the University of Edinburgh.
