Coco

My first project reimagines Pixar’s Coco as an adaptation for stage. The story follows a young boy named Miguel, who is transported to the Land of the Dead, where he embarks on a journey to reconnect with his family and receive their blessing to pursue his love of music. Throughout the story, Miguel learns about the importance of memory, family, and honouring those who came before us.

My costume design for Pepita is inspired by alebrijes, the brightly coloured dreamlike spirit creatures from Mexican folklore that guide lost souls through the Land of the Dead. The design combines lantern puppetry, sculptural silhouette, and vibrant festival-inspired textiles to create a visually immersive costume intended for live performance. Through this project, I explored how costume can function as both character and spectacle, using movement, light, colour, and scale to help bring the magical world of Coco to life on stage.

The Paperbag Princess

My second project reimagines the children’s fairytale The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch as a fashion-led critique of consumerism, identity, and liberation. The story follows Princess Elizabeth, whose castle and clothes are destroyed by a dragon, leaving her with nothing but a paper bag to wear. Despite this, she sets out to rescue the prince herself, only for him to tell her that she “looks a mess” once she succeeds. In response, Elizabeth rejects him entirely, calling him a bum and walking away.

Combining fairytale symbolism with imagery inspired by barcodes, receipts, and QR codes, the project presents costume as both satire and empowerment, reframing Elizabeth not as a traditional princess but as a symbol of independence and self-definition. Her final look transforms the paper bag into rebellious paper couture, featuring a sculptural scannable bra that symbolises her reclaiming ownership over her identity and rejecting the unrealistic beauty standards and consumer pressures placed onto women.
